True heroes who rose to the occasion when the world was in dire need of help.

The pandemic struck. People stayed inside. Offices, schools, colleges, shut. People stayed inside. Trains, cabs, busses were closed operations. People stayed inside. But when thousands of people started losing their livelihoods, these heroes decided to step out to help and support the needy every way they could.

Paritosh Pant and Pooja Reddy, Mumbai

This duo fed the poorest quarters of Mumbai

Restaurateur Paritosh Pant and lawyer Pooja Reddy were classmates and the Kendriya Vidyalaya at IIT Bombay. What started as a social media chat among the two, ended up changing the lives of thousands of daily-wagers and their families of Mumbai. For a week now, the duo has been feeding nutritious bhaaji and four pavs each to 3,000 people twice a day in Baiganwadi, one the poorest quarters of Mumbai. Together they came up with ‘Project Feeding from Far’ where they maintain utmost hygiene precautions and prepare meals with the help of some cooks. As and when more donations come in, their next step is to feed 10,000 people.

The transgender community in Surat, Bhuj, and Godhra distributed ration to the needy

Around 150 members from the Transgender Community in Gujarat distributing food packets as well as essentials like rice, flour, tea leaves, oil and sugar to those in need. This is not all, they are also giving away Rs 200 to each family, from the money they had saved from the Navratri fund.

Ganesh Bhatt, Uttarakhand

This Uttarakhand man used his car as an ambulance to help people

Ganesh Bhatt, a 32-year-old man from Devprayag in Tehri Garhwal district, saw that drivers in the area were scared to take patients to and from the hospitals fearing that they might contract the virus. Which is when he stepped ahead and used his own car as an ambulance and essential services delivery vehicle given the lockdown. He has been doing this since March 22 and has helped 24 people including a pregnant woman, as of today. He constantly sanitizes his hands and the vehicle to make sure they are virus-free. The locals are also helping him by contributing money for the fuel.

Suchana Saha, Kolkata
Doctors and nurses who were ostracized for ‘handling infection’ were given shelter by her

Suchana Saha, a final year student at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, convinced her father to give out two of their vacant flats in Nagerbazar, rent-free to the health workers who have been ostracized for “handling infection.” The 26-year-old made a post on social media and doctors and nurses got in touch with her soon after. Since those flats weren’t occupied for the past 6 months, Suchana’s brother, Swarnabh, their neighbour, Tapasi Mondal, and cook, Jyotsa Mondal, helped her clean and sanitize the flats. She has taken a really good step by taking care of those, who are taking care of us.

Sikh volunteers, America

They prepared over 30,000 meals for self-isolated citizens

The Sikh Centre of New York prepared more than 30,000 home-cooked meals for the people affected by COVID -19 in the city. The meal comprises of dry fruits, rice, and lentils and shall be delivered to elderly, specially-abled, homeless and single parents who are looking after their kids and cannot go out. Strict hygiene practices are being followed while preparing food. “We have requested gurudwaras across the country and the world to reach out to the stranded Indian students and provide them with meals and shelter,” said Jathedar Harpreet Singh, Sri Akal Takht Sahib and the spiritual leader of the Sikh community.

Sometimes the purest actions by humans, make us believe that God indeed, lies among us.
