IIT-Varanasi Students Build India’s Most Fuel-Efficient Car

  • With sustainable living getting popular, it seems electric vehicles would soon be the norm. These IIT students from Varanasi have built India’s most fuel-efficient vehicle.

Team AVERERA consists of 24 students from IIT-Varanasi who have built an electric three-wheeler, which gives good mileage. There is a need to become environmentally-conscious and turn to e-vehicles and these youngsters show us the way ahead.

It all began in the year 2018, when a team of 24 students from IIT-Varanasi built a three-wheeler, the Alterno. What’s unique about this vehicle is that it’s electric. The enterprising Team AVERERA, attempted to make a three-wheeler that was eco-friendly while also giving great efficiency—349.6km/kWh. For this, the team won the award for the first most fuel-efficient vehicle in India and the third most in Asia. This was at the Shell Eco-marathon (SEMS) held in Chennai last year in November.

Before this, they had also won the second position in the battery-electric prototype segment. They bagged the position at the Shell Eco-marathon held last year in Malaysia (April-May).

The objective was to create an environment-friendly vehicle. However, their efforts were full of difficulties. Himanshu, a 4th year Mechanical Engineering student said that the AVERERA team was formed in 2013. They started participating in the SEMS contest in 2015. That year, they were one of the few teams to represent the country at the competition. However, they could not clear the technical inspection round due to lack of experience. They cleared the round the following year, but their motor controller blew just before they were to go on the track for the run. This was because it was unable to cope with the humid conditions in Philippines where the event was taking place.

However, undeterred, they continued their efforts and experimented in modifying the vehicle. These modifications led to an efficiency of 462.5 km/kWh in the latest contest of Alterno 4.1. The team is also hoping to increase the mileage by some points—550 km/kWh, adds Himanshu.

Kudos to such youngsters who are concerned about the eco-system and are doing something to save and protect it. We look forward to more such inventions and a cleaner and greener environment.
