  • Their association has been planning post-monsoon irrigation for the past 27 years.

Farmers in the Dindori taluka of Nashik, have been on a singular mission – water conservation. The constant effort of 17,000 farmers has led them to the second prize of the Union government-instituted national water award, 2019, in the “best water users’ association” category.

The Waghad Project Level Water Users’ Association has been managing equitable water distribution for irrigation. They ensure proper distribution of water to every farmer through the canal network.

Shahaji Somwanshi, an office-bearer of the association said, “We were able to ensure water supply to every farmer. The farmers also learnt that security will come by paying for water. This has been the root of success of water management.”

Politicians do not play any role in this system, and the apex body is elected from 41 smaller units’ dependant on this project in the Dindori taluka.

The project is built on river Kolwam, and it irrigates more than 140% of its planned target of 6,750 hectares. All thanks to that, farmers who earlier could only take up kharif crops, can now cultivate cash crops like grapes.

We definitely need more such successful associations in the country, what do you think?
