Meet The Ones Helping Those Hit Hardest By COVID-19

  • A number of individuals and organisations are helping the needy and making sure they don’t go hungry. Here’s what they do and how you can help them.

A lot of us have the privilege to sit in the comfort of our house and work from home, but what happens to those who do not have this option? People who earn their wages on a daily basis – the rickshaw drivers, handcart pullers, daily wage labourers, waste pickers are bearing the brunt and struggling to make ends meet.

With their mode of income being disrupted, and the coming weeks looking bleak, these organisations have stepped up, gone beyond bounds and restored our faith in humanity. If you want to help them get by, you can donate food, money, or anything else and change lives.

Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA), Mumbai

This NGO did an early assessment in 20+ settlements and identified over 1,500 low-income and vulnerable families in Vasai, Virar, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Panvel. Under the campaign ‘Together We Can’ they distribute food kits consisting of rice, wheat, pulses, and oil to last a week, and costs Rs 600. They are in need of full-body suits, gloves, and masks to ensure their distribution team’s safety. In addition, contacts of truck/tempo operators to help them speed up the distribution process.
