Psychology is an intense subject and more than often you may get confused with a few terms. Here’s an attempt to debunk the confusion that you may come across.

Who are psychiatrists?

A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry, the branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental disorders. A psychiatrist usually works within a multi-disciplinary team, which may comprise clinical psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, and nursing staff. Psychiatrists have broad training in a bio-psycho-social approach to assessment and management of mental illness.

Who is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a person who studies normal and abnormal mental states, perceptual, cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behavior by experimenting with, and observing, interpreting, and recording how individuals relate to one another and to their environments. He or she studies the state of mind, focus on providing psychotherapy (talk therapy) to help patients. A psychiatrist diagnoses illness, manage treatment, and can prescribe medication too.

Who is a psychotherapist?

A psychotherapist is a trained professional who assists those who are suffering with stress, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, negative behavior patterns, debilitating feelings, and various other mental conditions. A psychologist can also be a therapist!

Who is a psychic?

A psychic is a person who claims to use extrasensory perception (ESP) to identify information hidden from the normal senses, particularly involving telepathy or clairvoyance, or who performs acts that are apparently inexplicable by natural laws. Basically, the whole idea of psychic and the use of extrasensory perception comes under pseudoscience. A large industry and network exist whereby people advertised as psychics provide advice and counsel to clients, however none of it can be proven. So be smart and always ask for fair credentials, especially after no scientific justification from research conducted over a period of 130 years for the existence of parapsychological phenomena.

The whole explanation of psychology and the science is a part of the initiative we have taken for Mental Health Awareness Week 2020, which began on 4th October till 10th October.

Hope this helps!
