In my opinion, no Indian meal ends without a few fennel seeds, or ‘saunf’ as we call them. While most of us have it just to freshen our breath, its benefits go way beyond that.

Fennel seeds are loaded with:

Copper

Potassium

Calcium

Zinc

Vitamin C

Iron

Selenium

Manganese

Magnesium

They can be really helpful for:

Reducing water retention

Sipping on fennel tea flushes out excess fluids and toxins from the body, which indirectly reduces the risk of urinary tract problems.

Cures bloating, indigestion and constipation

The oil from fennel seeds helps subdue the gastro problems. For people with IBS, this volatile oil can aid digestion by promoting the production of gastric enzymes.

Helps the body cool down

Fennel seeds have a cooling effect on the body and is considered as one the best drinks to have during summers. Fennel seed oil can also be used for body massages, as it calms down the worked up nerves and promotes mental clarity.

Great for cancer patients

Fennel seeds are very potent and have powerful scavenging properties that beat oxidative stress. They shield the body against stomach, breast and skin cancers. They have powerful chemo modulatory effects too.

Soothes asthma symptoms

The minerals found in fennel seeds help clear sinuses. They also aid with bronchitis, congestion, and cough. If taken regularly, fennel seeds can help curb asthma symptoms to a great extent.

How can you make sure you reap all these benefits from fennel seeds?

Make fennel tea: Add a teaspoon of fennel seeds to a cup of hot water. Let it sit for 10 minutes. Stir and consume warm. You can also add some mint leaves or honey to it.
