Our lives have gone digital and how! We are surrounded with screens wherever we look at. The digital world has made our lives easy as hell but it has taken a heavy toll on our poor eyes. In this article, learn how to maintain eye health in simple ways.

Do you experience sore, tired or burning eyes after a whole day at work spent before a digital screen? Do you often get a blurred or double vision? Do you eyes get watery, itchy or dry? Do you often complain of headaches? If your answer is  resounding ‘yes’ to these questions, then it is likely the result of eye strain.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule

The 20-20-20 rule, popularised by Dr Jeff Anshell, a specialist in vision ergonomics, states that to relieve eye strain one should gaze at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes of screen time. This eye movement relaxes the eye muscles. This can be achieved even by closing the eyes for those 20 seconds.

You can follow the 20-20-20 rule and learn how to maintain eye health in this manner:

  • Set an alarm for every 20 minutes while working, as a reminder to take a break.
  • Look out of a window during the 20-second break. Or if you do not have access to a window, focus your gaze on any soothing object or art or plant.

Here are some more ways that teach you how to maintain eye health:

Get a complete dilated eye exam done:

Often, people realise too late that they need to get their eye tested because of constant exposure to rays emitting from screens. During a dilated eye exam, the eye care professional dilates your eyes with the help of eye drops which lets him or her check your eye thorughly for any disorder.

Eat right:

Eat foods that contain natural pigments like carrots, leafy greens, beetroot, and so on. One also needs to include omega-3 fatty acids in the diet, hich are aplenty in waknuts and fish.

Keep a check on your body weight:

Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic conditions, which can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. If you are having trouble maintaining a healthy weight, talk to your doctor.

Wear protective eyewear:

Invest in good eye glasses and/ or contact lenses. Get those with blu ray protection that shiled your eyes from the rays emitting from digital screens. If you wear contact lenses or do not have power, still invest in zero power spectacles with blue ray protection shield and always have them on while working on any screen.

Make optimum use of your sunglasses:

Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the ultraviolet rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.

Maintain lens care routine:

This helps in eliminating the risk of eye infection. Always wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses. Make sure to disinfect contact lenses as instructed and replace them as appropriate.
